Microsania smoke flies swarm at Finnish prescribed burns; larvae in burnt soil barcode as Microsania mitochondrial COI, including the first larval description of M. straeleni. The organelle is a species ID tool.

Finding. Smoke flies finally have a childhood. Neuvonen, Twort and Stahls net Microsania at Finnish burns, then pull larvae from burnt soil whose mitochondrial COI says Microsania, including the first M. straeleni larva.
