Beta cells give mitochondria away. de Brito Monteiro, Klein Geltink, Verchere and colleagues paint beta-cell mitochondria green (PhAM flox, Ins1 Cre) and find the green in islet macrophages, in the mouse and in the dish. Stresses that push toward diabetes do not change how often it happens. Macrophages that accepted the organelle make more protein. Their RNA says Arc is up. Break actin dynamics and the gift stops.
Why this paper matters
Islet macrophages were already the local immune-metabolic cell. Cytokines and debris were the usual mail. An intact mitochondrion is a different letter. Frequency that does not budge under diabetogenic stress says this is closer to housekeeping than to a damage flare, at least in the conditions they used.

What to do with it If you work on islet immunometabolism or mitochondrial transfer, this is required. Ask whether the organelles respire in the macrophage. Do not write “diabetes is failed transfer” from a negative stress result.
